DOSHAS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Each Dosha governs the following primary functions in our bodies :

VATA      -     Movement and Communication

PITTA     -     Digestion and Transformation

KAPHA  -     Structure and Lubrication

Vata

Vata  represents the wind (air + ether elements), and controls movement and communication in our body and mind. It controls functions such as the flow of the breath, the beating of the heart, the functioning of muscles & tissues in the body, and so it is linked to agility. It is also responsible for all communication between the brain and the nervous system, and so it is also linked to creativity.

Pitta

Pitta is a combination of the fire and water elements, and is linked to all transformational functions such as the digestion of foods and the processing of thoughts and emotions. It is the Dosha responsible for our metabolism and our body temperature. It is also responsible for our power of assimilation, and so it is linked to intelligence.

Kapha

Kapha is a combination of the earth and water elements and it provides structure to all things. The earth element provides solidity and the water element hydrates our system. Kapha is thus responsible for our cellular structure, the  lubrication of our joints, moisturizing  of our skin and in general protecting our tissues.  Kapha is also associated with love and compassion (owing to its water element), and so Kapha persons tend to be nurturing in nature.
